Borehole image and dipmeter bibliography

Although the processing, analysis and interpretation of borehole images and dipmeters is a specialised study area, a number of books have been published that cover, or partly cover, this science. Some, and others that can help with an interpretation, are listed below along with comments. This list is not exhaustive and many useful papers are also published across a wide range of journals and as contributions to books.

AMADEI, B. AND STEPHANSSON, O. 1997. Rock Stress and its Measurement. Chapman & Hall, London, p490.

For those interested in rock stress this is an excellent introduction.

ASQUITH G. and KRYGOWSKI, D. (with sections by HENDERSON, S. and HURLEY, N.) 2004. Basic Well Log Analysis, Second Edition. AAPG Methods in Exploration Series, No. 16. AAPG, Tulsa. p244.

Replacement of old favourite. Good solid introductory chapter on borehole image by Neil Hurley. If you have a manager, or a new-start, who needs a one-hour read as an immediate introduction to borehole images, then this is the one.

COLLINSON, J., MOUNTNEY, N., and THOMPSON, D. 2006. Sedimentary Structures. Third Edition. Terra Publishing, Harpenden, p292.

Great introduction for new-starts and an excellent refresher for the grey-beards. Has a very good treatment of bedding fabrics which are directly applicable to the description and interpretation of sedimentary structures observed on borehole images.

ELLIS, D. J. and SINGER, J. M. 2008. Well logging for Earth Scientists. Second Edition. Springer, Dordrecht, p692.

A welcome recent addition to the current literature. Limited on treatment of borehole images, but full of useful physics and engineering that transfers to imaging technology. Must for a technical library.

ENGELDER, T. Stress Regimes in the Lithosphere. 1993. Princeton University Press, Princeton, p457.

Does exactly as it says on the lid, with a good coverage of theory and practical approaches. This is for those with more than just a passing interest in in-situ stress.

GROSHONG, R. H. Jr. 1999. 3-D Structural Geology, Springer, Berlin, p324.

Details SCAT analysis and includes a worked example.

HOWARTH, R. J. 1996. History of the stereographic projection and its early use in geology. Terra Nova, 8, 499-513.

A reference for the keen.

LEYSHON. P. R. and LISLE, R. J. 1996. Stereographic Projection Techniques in Structural Geology. Butterworth-Heinemann, Oxford, p104.

For those who do not want to revisit those difficult practicals on wet Thursday afternoons with drawing pins and tracing paper, look no further. A thorough and near friendly approach to stereonets as it gets. The first edition was supplied with some software. Second edition now in print.

Collection of papers that includes a wide range of case studies.

LUTHI, S. M. 2000. Geological Well Logs. Springer, Berlin, p373.

A must be-read volume. Stuffed full with appropriate material. Sells second-hand for a small fortune. Grab the one from your technical library. We force all our new-starts to read this.

Collection of the key borehole imaging papers up to 1990. Still full of relevant material. May not still be available for purchase.

PASSEY, Q. R. et al. 2006. Petrophysical Evaluation of Hydrocarbon-Pore Thickness in Thinly Bedded Clastic Reservoirs. AAPG Archie Series No. 1. AAPG, Tulsa, 210.

A superb volume; the look and feel of this book shouts class. Unlike some other AAPG publications, this one has a compelling visual beauty reflecting the bookmaker’s colourful art. In addition, crammed with material used to evaluate thin-bed pay including a very readable chapter on borehole images.

PRIEST, S. D. 1993. Discontinuity Analysis For Rock Engineering, Chapman & Hall, London, p473.

For those who want to get involved with dip-derived fracture and fault data. An engineering approach to fractures, joints and the like; includes some applicable equations that can be transferred to a spreadsheet. Text relating to bias very useful.

RIDER, M. 1996. The Geological Interpretation of Well Logs, Whittles Publishing, Caithness, p280.

Malcolm’s gentle but all-embracing introduction to well-logs for the geologist. Can be picked up and browsed. For a new start with an interest in images the second edition is a very good volume. One of the best technical books to have come out of the Scottish Highlands since General Wade’s evaluation of its road network in the 18th century.

STOW, D. A. V. 2006. Sedimentary Rocks in the Field. Manson Publishing, London, p320.

If your background is not in geology, or even sedimentology, then this field guide will show what a borehole image could capture at depth. All you have to do is place a thin window down the many field examples and visualise what it would appear like as a borehole image. The accompanying text is clear and provides many useful descriptive and interpretive cribs that can be equally applied to a borehole image.

THEYS, P. 1999. Log Data Acquisition and Quality Control, Second Edition. Éditions Technip, Paris, 453.

For a geologist worth a flick through, if just to understand what can go wrong. If you are involved at a deeper level in petrophysics then a read of some chapters in this volume will pay dividends.

ZOBACK, M. D. 2007. Reservoir Geomechanics. Cambridge University Press, p449.

Dialogue from an acknowledged master of his craft. If you are looking for an introduction to reservoir geomechanics look no further. Material that is spread across dozens of papers is swept together under one readable roof. If your company won’t buy one get your partner, or parents, to purchase a copy for your birthday.
